Program Details

This course provides students with an opportunity to enhance knowledge and skills in infection prevention and control in contemporary healthcare practice. The Course includes overview about infection prevention and control practices, Hospital Acquired infection, the chain of infection, standard and transmission-based precautions, barriers and use of personal protective equipment (PPE), outbreak/exposure management and strategies for preventing the spread of infectious disease to healthcare workers and patients.

It is essential to reinforce continual improvement in infection control and prevention, to maintain a safe environment for everyone by reducing the risk of the potential spread of disease. recognizing that in the current healthcare environment there are factors that increase the need for more vigilance. Hence, the course is designed to reduce the risk of hospital-associated infections and to ensure a safe and healthy hospital environment for patients, healthcare providers and visitors.

Through a series of lectures, discussions, group work, online and self-directed learning key areas related to Infection prevention and control will be explored. As part of this learning process you will critically analyse, appraise and reflect on infection prevention and control concepts, including current evidence.

Program Outcome

  • To learn scientifically accepted principles and practices of infection prevention and control
  • To recognize the professional responsibilities to monitor prevention and control practices and intervene as necessary to assure safety and compliance.
  • Identify the factors which influence the outcome of an exposure to pathogenic organisms in healthcare settings
  • Define healthcare-associated disease transmission, engineering controls, safe injection practices and work practice controls
  • Identify specific barriers and/or PPE for patient and HCW protection from exposure to potentially infectious material.
  • Recognize the importance of the correct application of reprocessing methods for assuring the safety and integrity of patient care equipment in preventing transmission of bloodborne pathogens.
  • Identify resources for evaluation of health care workers infected with any diseases
  • Plan, implement, manage and evaluate infection prevention and control activities.
