Critical care is the field with a focus on the utmost care of the critically ill or unstable patients following extensive injury, surgery or life-threatening diseases. It involves close, constant attention by a team of specially-trained health care providers. Many patients in critical care recover, but some die. Having advance directives in place is important. Through a series of lectures, discussions, group work, online and self-directed learning key areas related to critical care will be explored. As part of this learning process you will critically analyse, appraise and reflect on critical care concepts, including current evidence surrounding common nursing and medical interventions.

Program Outcome
- To explore practice, ethical, legal and interpersonal dimensions within the trauma/critical care setting.
- To examine the role of the professional nurse as an advocate for the acute trauma/critically ill client and the client-family unit.
- To evaluate their own personal skills to identify their learning needs by reflecting upon the management of therapeutic communication with an individual in crisis
- To Recognize signs and symptoms of emergencies, initiate interventions and seek assistance
- To assess the needs of patient and family regarding coping mechanisms in times of crisis
