Course Outcomes On successful completion of the course, the students will be able to: CO1 Understand the current voltage characteristics of semiconductor devices. CO2 Analyze dc circuits and relate ac models of semiconductor devices with their physical operation. CO3 Evaluate frequency response to understand behavior of Electronics circuits CO4 Designing of the electronic circuits. Theory Syllabus Unit Content Hrs. 1 DIODE THEORY AND APPLICATIONS: Basic P-N junction diode construction, Basic idea about forward Bias, Reverse bias and VI characteristics, Ideal diode, Second and third approximation, Testing of diode with multimeter, Half wave rectifier, Full wave rectifier, Clipping circuit, Clamping circuit, Voltage multiplier circuit. 6 2 SPECIAL PURPOSE DIODES AND TRANSISTORS: Light emitting diode (LED). Zener diode, Zener diode circuit for voltage regulation, Varactor, Schottky diode, Varistors, Tunnel diode, Seven Segment display, Photo transistor, Opto-coupler. 5 3 BIPOLAR JUNCTION TRANSISTOR AND ITS BIASING: Transistor basic construction & working, BJT operation, BJT voltages and currents, CE, CB and CC characteristics, DC load line and bias point, base bias, emitter feedback bias, collector feedback bias, voltage divider bias, Thermal stability, Testing of bipolar junction transistor with multi-meter 7 4 AC ANALYSIS OF BJT CIRCUITS AND SMALL SIGNAL AMPLIFIERS: Coupling and bypass capacitors, AC load lines, Transistor models and parameters, Common emitter circuit analysis, common base circuit analysis, common collector circuit analysis, Comparison of CE, CB and CC circuits, Transistor as a switch 5 5 FIELD EFFECT TRANSISTORS(FET) AND ITS BIASING: Junction field effect transistors(JFET), Comparison of BJT and FET, JFET characteristics, FET, biasing in ohmic region and active region, Trans-conductance, amplification and switching, MOSFETs (D-type and E-type MOSFET), CMOS introduction, E-MOSFET amplifier. MOSFET testing 7 6 OSCILLATORS AND FEEDBACK: Positive and negative feedback with its advantages and disadvantages, types of negative feedback circuits; Oscillators: Barkhousen criterion, Classification, RC phase shift oscillator Wein bridge oscillator, Colpitt oscillator, Hartleyoscillator, Crystal Oscillator. 5 7 PNPN DEVICES: Thyristor classification, Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR): Construction, working; SCR characteristics – Forward breakdown voltage (VBO), Holding current (Ih), Reverse breakdown voltage; DIAC and TRIAC – construction and operation & application 6 8 UNIJUNCTION TRANSISTOR(UJT): Basic construction and operation, UJT characteristics – Intrinsic standoff ratio, UJT relaxation oscillator 4 Practical Content Practicals are based on above syllabus.
